Program Description

After holding focus group sessions surrounding the 8 areas of excellence, a community based survey was deployed to Elliot Lake residents, the results were reviewed and analyzed in partnership with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, and an Age Friendly Action Plan working group was formed with a City staff member and volunteer members to create the Age Friendly Elliot Lake Action Plan. The City of Elliot Lake’s Age Friendly Action Plan was completed and approved by municipal Council in April 2017. As of June 2018, City staff have completed a number of goals in the Action Plan in partnership with organizations, stakeholders, and community members. The route the City has taken thus far is when federal or provincial funding becomes available and aligns with a goal from the Action Plan, City staff will apply to leverage funding for a project. In addition, the City of Elliot Lake has funds dedicated to Age Friendly implementation.

The City’s current focus is on Transportation (local and intercommunity), Respect & Social Inclusion, Outdoor Spaces & Buildings, Communication & Information, Community Support & Health Care Services, and Social Participation.

The City has applied through the World Health Organization to be recognized as an Age Friendly Community and are eagerly awaiting a response.
