Program Description:

Currently, AFC Temiskaming Shores & Area is in the Evaluation and Implementation phase. Through the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund the ‘GetActive!’ program has been successfully in effect since July 2017 with an end date of March 2019. The program seeks to reduce barriers and encourage local older adults to take part in existing physical activity opportunities in addition to introducing new activities to the area (Pickleball, Indoor Walking etc.). This meets a goal identified in the Social Participation pillar. ‘Connecting our Community’ includes funding from the Seniors Community Grant Program to provide free, accessible transportation to older adults in participating in designated local events. The funding will also be used to facilitate ‘Travel Training’ programs for older adults in an effort to encourage residents to be more comfortable in using public transportation. Due to the popularity of the SipNLearn’s, they are continuing on a once/month basis until December 2018 at which time it will be re-evaluated.  The Stay on Your Feet program through Timiskaming Health Unit funds the ‘Active Aging Series’ column outlining ways for older adults in the area to get involved in physical activity as well as upcoming opportunities. Through the creation of the Temiskaming Shores Seniors Housing Committee, the AFC has contributed information and insights in furthering the identified need of additional affordable housing for older adults. The OACAO has reached out to the Age Friendly Committee to partner in offering a Seniors’ Information & Active Living Fair in September 2018.
